PLAYGROUND is designed to help you think about colour in a playful, curious way and embrace fearless experimentation. By the end, you’ll not only have beautiful scarves but also a whole new perspective on colour and creativity.

Plus, there’s a bonus lesson at the end to help you think outside the box—adding unique details to your scarves and even incorporating a touch of crochet for an extra creative twist!

By the end of this workshop, you’ll:

  • Learn how to combine colours in ways that feel bold, fresh, and uniquely YOU.
  • Transform your yarn stash into stunning scarves that tell a story.
  • Approach knitting with a playful, open mindset that sparks joy and creativity.
  • Gain the confidence and inspiration to apply these colour-mixing techniques to ALL your future projects—whether it’s knitting, crochet, or even beyond yarn crafts!

Here’s what’s waiting for you inside PLAYGROUND:

  • Step-by-step video lessons: Clear, easy-to-follow tutorials that guide you through the course.
  • Colour confidence tools: Tips and tricks for fearless colour experimentation, so you can create combinations you LOVE.
  • Scarf patterns with a twist: Once you knit your unique scarf design, you'll discover ways to get creative with it and add details that showcase your creativity and style.
  • Unlimited access to keep the creativity flowing whenever inspiration strikes!

To get started, all you need is:

  • Basic knitting knowledge (casting on and basic knitting stitches).
  • A pair of knitting needles: I recommend starting with 7mm needles for the first scarf, but you can also use 6mm, 8mm, or 9mm depending on your preference.
  • A thin crochet hook: 3mm or so.
  • A mix of yarns from your stash—this is all about using what you already have! I recommend starting with at least 5 balls of yarn in the same thickness and in 5 different colours. These can be tiny leftover balls too, which makes stash yarn PERFECT for this project! DK weight yarns are a great starting point, but don’t stress—your stash likely already has what you need.

The Playground Scarf

This class, like all the others, is enjoyable and informative. A bit if a challenge because I have always been a more conservative knitter (and crocheter). Aluma encourages me to use colors in a way different way which takes me just a little out of my comfort zone. I haven’t finished my scarf yet, but am looking forward to the end result, it will be interesting and colorful.

So good (again)!

I have purchased all of Aluma's courses now and I love them all. This one has a particular focus on colour mixing, and I found it really helpful. All of the courses are so well structured, with clear guidance and this makes them suitable for all skill levels. Highly recommended.

Rediscovering my creativity

I've been stuck in a rut. Playing it safe. Second guessing my choices. Signing up for the Playground workshop has got me back on the road to my old playful self. Nature doesn't colour code where seeds may drop or what the bees might do when pollinating flowers and creating new and interesting combinations. And that is how I felt about this workshop. I became curious along the way as to what happens when a one wool is mixed with another (something encouraged in this workshop), what colours pop or recede when placed side by side, the effect of textures on shade and light (and playfulness!), and also what happens when I allowed myself to use little bits of colour I don't normally use on clothing for me. This workshop really lets you play and encourages you to leave the colour combos you're not as happy with - the learning experience is both the journey and the destination.
I have a stash of wool that is left over bits from years of knitting for myself, my children and now their children and friends. I also inherited my late aunts wool scraps. She was still knitting multi coloured blankets for babies in her mid 90s. As an artist she had a wonderful sense of colour and I always marvelled at her combinations. I felt very connected to her as I knitted my scarf. One of my nieces died young and I was fortunate to be given some of the bits she had in her stash - beautiful silk sari yarn, which I incorporated into my scarf. Some colour combinations I used in my children's knitting I recalled and used with much delight. So my scarf is not only colourful and full of texture, it is also a scarf to wrap me up in memories.
The layout of workshop material was this adult learners dream. Broken up into meaningful sections with the right pace, and most of all the encouragement to play with few rules.
And a side effect has been a digital media detox, that is so far enduring!
I'm looking forward to playing and learning more.
Thank you Aluma for your passion and sharing.
